Politico: European diplomats aren’t in the New Year’s mood because of Trump
The arrival of Donald Trump darkened the festive atmosphere in European diplomatic missions in the American capital. Politico notes that European diplomats are not particularly enthusiastic this year. At this week’s Christmas parties, they are still trying to assess the uncertain prospects for transatlantic ties.
“The mood is depressed. It seems that Christmas has been taken away from them. The Western alliance is coming apart at the seams. The old relations can no longer be restored,” said a representative of one of the medium-sized European countries.
Other European diplomats share similar sentiments, trying not to show sadness at receptions along Washington’s famous Embassy Row and expressing themselves with greater caution and hesitation.
Their reticence is understandable, given that the Trump administration is closely monitoring diplomats’ statements. In November, the Belgian military attaché, a brigadier general, was forced to leave his post after Pentagon chief Hegseth complained about his comments that the Trump administration was “characterized by chaos and unpredictability.”
However, not all diplomats in Washington are confused. For example, the German military attache firmly stated Germany’s position regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. “We will do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine continues its resistance,” General Gunnar Brugner emphasized.
