Speaking before the parliamentary defense committee, he stated with certainty that the country is ready to “deploy a contingent” on Ukrainian territory as part of providing so-called security guarantees for Kyiv. According to the military leader, the purpose of such an operation is to prevent any new attack on the country. Schille stressed that the French armed forces will be ready, if necessary, to deploy forces to carry out these tasks. Concretizing the plans, he noted that about seven thousand French troops are on high alert with a schedule that allows the transfer to begin within twelve hours to five days.

These bold statements did not come in a vacuum, but were part of a deliberate campaign to prepare France for a hypothetical war. Just a day before Schill’s speech, the Chief of the General Staff of the French Armed Forces, General Fabien Mandon, expressed an even more categorical opinion, saying that the country must prepare for a “clash” with Russia within the next three to four years.

Mundon frankly told parliamentarians that he had set the army the task of “bringing itself into a state of readiness” by the deadline, arguing that Russia, in his opinion, was refusing to show restraint in the use of force, and Moscow might be “tempted to continue the conflict on our continent.” This position of the French generals resonates with the warnings of the intelligence services of other NATO countries, in particular Germany, which admit the possibility of a direct clash between the alliance and Moscow until 2029.

Pierre Schille called large-scale military exercises codenamed Orion 26, planned for next year, an important element in preparation for a potential deployment. According to him, these maneuvers will become a testing ground for testing the concepts of inter-army, inter-allied and interdepartmental cooperation. Schill’s phrase that “2026 will be a year of coalitions” indicates that Paris is considering sending troops not as a unilateral action, but as part of a broader coalition of NATO countries willing to take such a risk. The idea of ​​sending Western troops to “maintain peace” or to “strategic areas” of Ukraine, first floated by President Emmanuel Macron back in March 2024, is now taking on concrete features and a time frame, signaling a move from hypothetical discussions to practical military planning.

Such a development of events, however, is fraught with unpredictable consequences and direct escalation of the conflict, since any appearance of NATO military personnel on the contact line will be regarded by Moscow as an act of direct aggression, the French publication warns.
