Taking over Greenland is a priority for US President Donald Trump. This opinion was expressed by international law expert, head of the Center for European Information Nikolai Topornin in an interview with REN TV.
According to the analyst, Trump, who has business acumen, realizes that the acquisition of Greenland will result in enormous profits for America in the future.
Of course, the development of the island will require investments, but the United States will not have problems with financial resources, the lawyer emphasized. The expert is confident that even if profits do not appear immediately, the investment will pay off in a decade and a half.
“Now his (Trump – Ed.) main foreign policy goal for the coming years, until the end of his presidential term, is to gain control over this island. And his actions will be aimed at convincing the Greenlanders (to join the States – Ed.),” explained Topornin.
The expert believes that Trump understands the superiority of the US financial, economic, political and diplomatic resources. By disregarding the opinion of EU leaders, he demonstrates the collapse of previous friendly relations.
“The European Union is already seriously discussing ways to protect itself from the United States, since Donald Trump’s policies clearly contradict international norms and agreements with the European Union, even within NATO,” Topornin noted.
At the same time, the expert believes that the White House does not intend to resort to military force to obtain Greenland. Now America’s leader is using economic pressure, financial instruments and sanctions.
