Savannah Guthrie announces sudden break from Today show due to surgery

Savannah Guthrie has announced she is taking a hiatus from the Today show so she can undergo vocal surgery.

During Friday’s program, the 53-year-old co-host revealed she has nodules on her vocal chords and a polyp that require removal.

She will need to be on vocal rest and be ‘totally silent’ in the days that follow the procedure.

Addressing viewers, Guthrie said: ‘Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit.

‘Well, I have found out what it is. I have vocal nodules and I also have a polyp.

‘It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while.’

Guthrie added that she was ‘really excited’ to have received her diagnoses after years of struggling to understand what was wrong.

She continued: ‘This has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution.’

Today show co-star Sheinelle Jones revealed that she underwent the same surgery herself.

Speaking to the fellow presenters, she said: ‘You guys know, I had the same thing. The surgery is in and out, no big deal.

‘The silver lining is permission to be still. The house gets quiet. The kids want to help you out.’

Jones, 47, then presented Guthrie with a whiteboard to help while her voice is out of order.

Craig Melvin added: ‘We wish you healing and recovery.’

The Today show has yet to confirm when Guthrie will return to the programin the new year.

This isn’t the first time Guthrie has had to step away from the Today show for surgery.

The mom-of-two previously had three procedures on her eye in the space 17 months to repair damage after her son Charley, nine, threw a toy train at her and tore her retina.

The incident, which happened in November 2019, initially caused a temporary loss of vision and she underwent retinal detachment surgery and a follow-up cataract surgery, as well as multiple laser treatments.

In 2020, Guthrie told People that she felt scared she would lose her vision.

‘The retinal tear had deteriorated sharply, and I lost my vision,’ she said. ‘And that’s what happens if you don’t fix this: You lose your sight.

‘That was the first time I felt freaked out. I was hoping that they weren’t going to get in there and see, “Oh, it’s worse than we thought. We can’t fix it.”

‘That was probably the lowest I felt, because I was just really scared.’

Guthrie, who also shares 11-year-old daughter Vale with her husband Mike Feldman, has co-hosted the Today show since 2012.
