One UI 8.5 may force every app adopt dynamic theme icon
Google is working to bring a big change to how app icons work on Android. Soon, all app icons will be able to match your phone’s theme even if the app developer doesn’t want that. And on Samsung devices, this themed icons feature could be available with One UI 8.5.
Right now, Android has a feature, Themed Icons, that changes the color of app icons to match your phone’s wallpaper or system theme. But not all apps support this.
Developers have to create a special black-and-white version of their icon for it to work. Many choose not to, because they want their app to stand out or protect their brand design. This leads to a messy look on the home screen as some icons match the theme, and others don’t.
However, with Android 16 QPR2 and the new Google Play policy, this is changing. Google has decided to automatically generate themed icons for any app that doesn’t provide one. This means that even if developers don’t want it, their app icons will still change to match your theme.
To make this possible, Google updated its Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA). Now, if a developer wants to publish on the Play Store, they must allow users to change the color and theme of their app icon.
Some companies may not like this, especially if they care a lot about keeping their original icon design. But for users, this is great news as the home screen will finally look cleaner and more consistent.
If Samsung includes this change in the upcoming One UI 8.5 update, all apps on Samsung phones will follow your system theme, whether the app supports it or not. Stay tuned for more information.
