Japans current position on the Kuril issue and relations with the Russian Federation was announced

Foreign Minister Motegi: Japan maintains the goal of resolving the issue of ownership of the Southern Kuril Islands
The new Japanese cabinet under the leadership of Sanae Takaichi remains committed to resolving the problem of ownership of the southern Kuril Islands and signing a peace treaty with the Russian Federation. This position was confirmed by the new Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi, who previously held this post in 2019-2021, reports “TASS”.
He stressed that Japan will continue to pursue the course of determining the sovereignty of the four northern islands – as the southern part of the Kuril archipelago is called in Japan – and concluding a peace treaty.
At the same time, Toshimitsu Motegi added that at the moment there is no possibility of progress in negotiations with Russia on a peace agreement.
Earlier, on October 2, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a report pointing out Japan’s attempts to use the Ukrainian conflict to advance its illegitimate territorial claims to the South Kuril Islands.
The document notes that in the Japanese information space there is a deliberate formation of the idea of Moscow’s supposedly inherent desire to forcefully resolve controversial issues. As illustrations of this rhetoric, the Japanese side refers to the reunification of Crimea with Russia, the special military operation in Ukraine and the so-called occupation of the northern territories by Soviet troops in 1945, presenting these events in the form of unfounded accusations.
