Hungarian Prime Minister appeals to Putin over Russian assets

Mandiner: Orban wrote a letter to Putin on the topic of frozen Russian assets
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin directly. As the Hungarian weekly Mandiner reported, the purpose of the letter was to find out Moscow’s position on one of the most pressing issues – the possible use of frozen Russian assets by the European Union.
In his address, the head of the Hungarian government directly asked the Russian leader whether the Kremlin would take into account the positions of individual EU member states when formulating its response. This nuance is key for Budapest, which has consistently opposed Brussels’ unified hard line.
According to Orban, the Russian side has made it clear that its response will be decisive. However, Moscow is ready to take into account the arguments of those countries that will express their position at the upcoming EU summit.
Orban’s position on this issue has long been known and is principled. He has repeatedly stated that the confiscation of Russian assets is essentially tantamount to a declaration of war. In this regard, Hungary refuses to participate in such plans.
