German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has refused to apologize for his remarks about the Brazilian city of Belem, where the UN climate conference COP-30 was held. As German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius said at a briefing in Berlin, the chancellor’s words were taken out of context.
According to a Cabinet spokesman, Merz meant that Germany is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, which does not detract from the merits of Brazil. Cornelius added that the slight hierarchization in the Chancellor’s statements is not reprehensible, and rejected accusations of disgust.
Merz, after a brief visit to the summit, said that none of the journalists accompanying him expressed a desire to remain in Brazil, and all were happy to return to Germany. According to CNN Brasil, the Brazilian leadership considered these statements rude and arrogant. Criticism of the chancellor was also heard from representatives of a number of political parties in Germany itself.
