YouTube Music’s Now Playing screen has a new layout – Here’s what changed

YouTube Music has introduced a new design for its Now Playing screen. This update changes where many buttons and features are placed, so it might take some time for users to get comfortable with the new layout.

The main change is the introduction of a dual-pane design (via 9to5Google), by which the screen now looks more modern and organized. The Song/Video switch button, which used to be at the top of the screen, has moved to a carousel, just below the song progress bar.

The playback controls like shuffle, back, play/pause, forward, and repeat have also changed positions. They are now located where the Song/Video switcher used to be, under the song title and artist name.

The progress bar itself looks different too. It now has a more boxy shape and no longer shows the small moving circle that used to track the song’s progress.

Some tabs have been removed from the bottom of the screen, such as Up Next, Lyrics, and Related. Instead, Lyrics now have a place in the carousel. To see Related songs, you must tap the song title, which may feel less straightforward.

To view the playlist or radio queue that’s playing next, you’ll use a new drag handle. The redesign also removes the colorful backgrounds from the Lyrics and Related sections.

This redesign follows YouTube Music’s recent move to limit free users’ access to lyrics. It is encouraging more people to subscribe to the Premium service. If you don’t see it, try closing the app completely and opening it again.
