Sarah Hyland‘s passion for pets is at the heart of her latest project.

Speaking with PEOPLE via Zoom, the Modern Family alum, advocate, and domestic abuse survivor announced her partnership with Purina for the Courageous Together Collection, which features a variety of items for both pet lovers and their furry friends to wear (or display) to inspire others.

“I just love working with Purina, and this collection is so special and it’s so important,” Hyland, 34, says. “Purina shares a lot of my beliefs in the transformative power of bonds that we share with our pets.”

“So 100% of every purchase is donated to RedRover through The Purple Leash Project.” RedRover works to keep abuse survivors with their pets. Hyland mentions that less than 20% of domestic violence shelters allow pets. “So these donations really go to help save not only humans but their animals as well.”

As for what is featured in the collection, there are matching sweatshirts for humans and pets, along with a tote bag and pet beds. Hyland also helped design bespoke charm necklaces, bracelets, and more in partnership with female-owned company Coastal Caviar.

The matching pieces come from Hyland’s passion to coordinate with her own pets. “I’m the kind of person that buys matching pajamas with my dog, like the moms from the ’80s and ’90s that did that with their daughters,” she says.

“And I’m just so grateful to be included with this because it is such an important cause, especially coming up towards domestic violence awareness month [in October].” The collection aims to empower others and encourage conversations about domestic abuse to reduce the stigma of shame that survivors may feel.

Hyland also speaks about the relationship she has with The Purple Leash Project as the recipient of the first-ever Courage Award presented by The Purple Leash Project at the Variety Awards.

“It wasn’t anything that I thought that I would ever be honored for, speaking out about domestic violence,” Hyland says about the award.

“So I think the relationship that we’ve cultivated together is not only special for me, but I think the fact that we are talking about the stigmas of domestic violence and really putting out the statistics out there for people to understand, as long as we keep the conversations going, as long as it changes one person’s life, then it’ll be all worthwhile.”

Starting in 2019, Purina and RedRover have provided over 55 Purple Leash Project grants to make domestic violence shelters throughout the U.S. pet-friendly.

The goal is to make sure no survivors face the difficult decision between their safety and the safety of their pets.

Hyland’s love for pets runs deep. “Animals are some of the most nurturing, pure-loving souls on the planet, and we should do everything to protect them,” she says.

“I think that pets are more capable of pure love than humans are. And that’s a really nice thing to have.”
