Trumps bizarre Santa Claus comments cause backlash on social media

US President Donald Trump has left people baffled with his messages this Christmas, from his Christmas Eve phone calls about Santa ‘infiltrating’ the US, to his Christmas Day rant about ‘the Radical Left Scum’

While politicians giving Christmas messages is certainly nothing new, US President Donald Trump’s recent address about Father Christmas has certainly raised a few eyebrows.

On Christmas Eve, POTUS took calls from children eagerly awaiting the arrival of Old Saint Nick, using the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) to track his progress across the globe.

But rather than focus on the kids’ Christmas wishes, or whether they’d left a carrot out for Rudolph, Trump instead harked back to the 2020 presidential election, an event which remains a point of contention amongst MAGA supporters, a number of whom continue to falsely believe that victory was ‘stolen’ from former President Joe Biden.

Indeed, things became so heated that, on January 6, 2021, a group of Trump supporters stormed Washington’s Capitol building in a bid to stop Congress from counting the Electoral College votes and formalising Biden’s win.

Five years on, and it would appear that this loss still weighs heavily on the 79-year-old’s mind, even after his subsequent re-election.

Speaking with one five-year-old from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump, who lost Pennsylvania in the 2020 race, made the following unsupported boast: “Pennsylvania’s great. We won Pennsylvania, actually, three times.”

The businessman-turned-politician then alluded to 2020 yet again when discussing the NORAD Santa tracker with another young child. He declared, “We track Santa. We want to ensure that Santa is behaving. We want to make sure that he’s not infiltrated, that we’re not infiltrating into our country a bad Santa. Santa loves Oklahoma like I do. You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election.”

Those tuning into the broadcast didn’t exactly find these exchanges heartwarming, taking to social media to share their thoughts on this “cringe” interaction. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitterone person commented: “Trump is incapable of acting decently, even when speaking to a child…about Santa.”

Another tweeted: “Always veers everything towards himself. Even tries to upstage Santa!” A third wrote: “He is destroying the spirit of Christmas. Where are the ‘War on Christmas’ soldiers at now?” This isn’t the first time Trump has rubbed people the wrong way with his discussions of Santa.

Back in 2018, during his first term in the Oval Office, the president took a call from a seven-year-old named Coleman, whom he asked, “Are you still a believer in Santa?” He then added, “Because at 7, it’s marginal, right?”

While Trump’s Christmas Eve phone calls weren’t exactly cheerful, his Christmas Day message also struck a somewhat negative note, hitting out at those he deems “the Radical Left Scum”. The official Trump X account tweeted out the following message: “Merry Christmas to all, including the Radical Left Scum that is doing everything possible to destroy our Country, but are failing badly.”
