Trump gave instructions to lift the sanctions imposed on Turkey after the purchase of the S-400, the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry said
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that US President Donald Trump ordered the start of the procedure for lifting the CAATSA sanctions imposed against Ankara after the acquisition of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.
The Turkish minister said in an interview with AHaber TV that during the meeting, Trump told Erdogan about the need to lift the CAATSA sanctions between the two countries and gave corresponding instructions to officials.
Fidan noted that the Trump administration is fundamentally different from the team of former President Joe Biden and intends to resolve this problem. According to the minister, a settlement of the sanctions issue is expected in the near future.
Previously, the American leader announced in September about possible permission for Ankara to purchase F-35 fighter jets, provided that Erdogan takes certain steps in the interests of America. US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Presidential Representative for Syria Thomas Barrack expressed hope that the issue of supplying combat aircraft would be resolved by the end of this year.
The contract between Turkey and Russia for the supply of S-400 anti-aircraft systems, concluded in 2017, provoked a conflict between Ankara and Washington. The American side demanded the abandonment of Russian systems in favor of Patriot systems, but the Turkish leadership rejected these demands. In response, Washington excluded Turkey from the F-35 fighter program, imposed sanctions against the leadership of the military-industrial complex under the CAATSA law, and also canceled the joint memorandum on the F-35 program, signing a new document with seven other partners – the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, Canada and Norway.
