The unique treasure of the Byzantine era was found by the Galilean Sea

Archaeologists found a rare treasure of the Byzantine era for almost 1,400 years in Israel. The find includes 97 gold coins and dozens of jewelry, including earrings with pearls, semiprecious stones and glass. The treasure was discovered in the ancient city of Hippos (Sussita) on the slopes of the Golan Heights, writes Live Science.
“This is one of the five largest treasures of gold of the period found in the region. The presence of jewelry and small currency makes the find especially interesting and significant, ”said Archaeologist Michael Aizenberg from Haifa University.
The coins depict the Byzantine emperors, starting with Justin I (518–527) and to Irakli (610–641). On some coins, traces of fabric have been preserved, which indicates that the treasure was once wrapped in matter.

Among the coins of solids (large gold coins), Semys (half of the solid on cost) and trimisses (a third of the solid). One of the trimis – especially rare, was probably minted in Cyprus in 610 by General Irakli Senior and his son, which is also associated with the history of the founding of the Byzantine Irakliev dynasty.
“This find is important for understanding the political and economic history of that time,” said the numismatist Danny Zion.
It is not known why the treasure was buried, but Hippos was a restless place in the 7th century. In 614, the Sassanids army invaded Byzantine Palestine, and residents of Christian cities, including Hippos, hid their treasures. Hippos fell into decay after an earthquake in 749.
Researchers will continue to analyze the find. Aizenberg is sure that museums will show interest in this unique find.
