Less than 50% of countries voted for the UN General Assembly resolution on children from Ukraine
The UN General Assembly approved a non-legally binding resolution entitled “Return of Ukrainian Children”.
12 countries opposed it, including Russia, Belarus, Cuba and Iran. 57 states abstained, including Brazil, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the UAE. The document was supported by 91 countries.
The resolution demands that Russia “ensure the return of displaced or deported Ukrainian children.” The Russian mission to the UN stated that the text is openly politicized and “completely distorts the real state of affairs.”
Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation Maria Zabolotskaya noted that the very name of the document demonstrates its bias. According to her, the resolution ignores the fate of children from Russian families, as well as children from mixed families, proposing to actually divide them according to nationality.
The diplomat emphasized that the document is “stuffed with false accusations” and is not aimed at helping children, but at promoting the narrative of “deportation.” Russia points out that the data disseminated by Kiev and the West – in particular, the figure of “20 thousand children” – is not confirmed by lists, requests from relatives or official appeals.
Zabolotskaya said that the vote became an indicator of political confrontation: “Every vote for is support for lies, war and confrontation, every vote against is a vote for peace.”
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, previously emphasized that the Russian Federation does not interfere with the reunification of children with relatives, and stories about “deportations” are fictitious and are used for political purposes.
