Residents of Finland are invited by the military to volunteer for military service

The Finnish Defense Forces has announced that it will continue to recruit women for voluntary military service. According to the official statement of the department’s press service, applications from Finnish citizens will be accepted until January 15, 2026. This decision marks an important stage in the development of the Finnish army, since 2025 will be a milestone year – it will be 30 years since the first women began serving in the country.

Historical statistics show significant interest in this opportunity: to date, more than 14 thousand women have already completed voluntary service in brigade-level military units of the Finnish Defense Forces and Border Guard.

A special feature of the new recruitment will be that in 2026, women will for the first time begin serving in the company of border rangers of the Lapland border detachment, located in Ivalo. This elite unit of the military structure of the border guard has traditionally been considered exclusively male.

Finnish citizens aged 18 to 29 who meet the health requirements are invited to participate in the program. The selection procedure includes several stages: after receiving a medical report, candidates undergo a fitness test and an interview in April.

It is important to note that military service can be performed in all brigade-level units and in all positions without exception. In the application, those interested can indicate their preferences regarding the time and place of service. For some military specialties, the application deadline is as early as November 30th.
