When such rivers reach sushi and slow down, an important process occurs: the steam condenses into the clouds and can fall in the form of a large amount of rain or snow. One powerful atmospheric river is capable of falling asleep the Sierra Nevada mountains and a half meters of snow, quickly replenishing the depleted reservoirs, but at the same time causing floods that can destroy entire areas.
Scientists of the University of California at Santa Barbar found that atmospheric rivers no longer follow their previous routes and move towards the poles. Such a change was unexpected for scientists. The study was published in the journal Science Advances.
“Atmospheric rivers are shifted to poles in both hemispheres, bringing strong rains and storms to higher latitude, which can change the sedimentation model around the world,” the first author explains.
Climate models predicted many changes associated with global warming, but this is not a specific displacement of storm tracks. After analyzing about 40 years of data, scientists have discovered a noticeable change.
The data show that the root cause is ocean conditions. The direction of the rivers is influenced by changes in the temperature of the sea surface in the tropical eastern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Researchers suggest that a significant part of the observed displacement reflects natural variability, and not a direct human effect.
These changes already cause practical problems: areas that regular winter rains are now faced with droughts, while previously uncharacteristic storms come to high latitudes.
