The nation mourned today following the news that the late Queen’s cousin, the Duchess of Kent, has died aged 92.

The Duchess, who became the oldest living member of the Royal Family when Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022, died at Kensington Palace on Thursday night, surrounded by members of her family.

One of the most charming royals of her generation, it’s perhaps of little surprise that Katharine was grandmother to some of the Royal Family’s most glamorous grandchildren.

Katherine, with her husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, had three children: Lady Helen Taylor, George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and Lord Nicholas Windsor.

61-year-old Helen is mother to her four children with husband Timothy Taylor, Columbus Taylor, 31, Cassius Taylor, 28, otherwise known as the ‘bad boy royal’, Eloise Olivia Katherine Taylor, 22, and Estella Taylor, 20.

Meanwhile, Helen’s younger brother Lord Nicholas Windsor, 55, is the father of two sons, Albert Windsor, 17, and Leopold Windsor, 15.

The youngest of Katherine’s children, George Windsor, the Earl of St Andrews, has three children: Edward Windsor, 36, Lady Marina Charlotte Windsor, 32, and the model often dubbed the ‘most beautiful royal’, Lady Amelia Windsor, 30.

LADY AMELIA WINDSOR

Lady Amelia was born in Cambridge in 1995, the second daughter of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, the son of the Duke of Kent, and Sylvana Tomaselli, a Canadian-born academic and historian.

The royal made her debut into society after leaving St Mary’s at the age of 18 at the Bal des Debutantes in 2013, alongside Italian aristocrat Donna Melusine Ruspoli and Indian royal Princess Akshita Bhanj Deo,

Following this, Amelia took a gap year to explore India and Thailand, before returning to the UK and studying French and Italian at the University of Edinburgh.

Now, at 30 years old, Lady Amelia is one of the UK’s most glamorous young aristocrats.

The Tatler cover girl is currently 43rd in line to the throne and was famously dubbed ‘the most beautiful member of the royal family’ when she graced the magazine’s cover in 2016.

A fashion powerhouse, she has been signed with Storm Model Management since 2016, joining an illustrious roaster of clients including Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne and Lady Kitty Spencer.

Amelia, who lives in Notting Hill with her sister, has also been making a name for herself with designer collaborations, including collections with SALOME and Pretty Ballerina.

Since January 2021, she has been the patron of the Cross River Gorilla Project, a wildlife initiative aiming to protect Critically Endangered Cross River gorillas from extinction.

CASSIUS TAYLOR

At 45th-in-line to the throne, Cassius Taylor, 28, has had a little more freedom than some of his royal relatives.

These days, however, he is less likely to appear in group shots on the Buckingham Palace balcony and more likely to appear wearing shades on social media – often at the opening of some artistic venture or other – or DJ-ing at a party.

This makes sense as Cassius is the son of Lady Helen Taylor, and art-dealer Timothy Taylor – and like the children and grandchildren of Princess Margaret, is a signed-up member of the Royal Family’s creative wing.

He has become something of a darling of the London art scene, in fact, and has turned his first tattoo into a whimsical art exhibition.

Like other more distant members of the royal family, Cassius, who was born in 1996, has been allowed to grow up away from the spotlight. As a child, he would make rare public appearances, including the balcony of Buckingham Palace for Trooping the Colour.

He was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire, which costs £35,775-a-year, before heading to Goldsmiths, where he got a degree in art management.

After graduating, he worked for his father’s London gallery before joining the PR agency Purple, where he dabbled in the events business, organising glitzy receptions at Somerset House. He eventually left Purple PR and set up his own events company, named ‘Telltale.’

The royal has since curated his own show, which took at the Painting Rooms of Flitcroft Street in Soho. He also shares a glimpse into his artsy life on Instagram, where snaps show him DJing with friends or hanging out with his glamourous friends.

EDWARD WINDSOR

Edward studied at Eton before going to the University of Oxford, where he was the head of the Bullingdon Club

Edward Windsor, 36, who is also known as Lord Downpatrick, is the Earl of St Andrews’ only son.

The Scotland-dweller, who also goes by Eddy Downpatrick, is second-in-line for the Dukedom of Kent, and uses his grandfather Baron Downpatrick as a courtesy title.

Unlike his younger sister Amelia, who is 42nd in line for the British throne, Eddy is excluded from the line of succession because he is Roman Catholic.

That is because he followed the example of his grandmother, the Duchess of Kent, who is also Roman Catholic, and his uncle Lord Nicholas Windsor.

Edward, who is said to be close to his cousin Princess Eugenie, studied at Eton before heading to Oxford, where he was the head of the Bullingdon Club, which is known for its raucous reputation.

The royal, who lives away from the limelight, has had several business venture throughout the years.

He worked as a financial analyst for JP Morgan for some time before quitting and becoming a fashion designer in 2016.

In 2017, he launched his label FIDIR with his co-founder Justine Dalby, which sells a collection of outerwear and accessories. The collections are inspired by his love of the Scottish Highlands.

LADY MARINA WINDSOR

The intending couple, both 32, have been dating for around two years. They celebrated the news with a toast together

Lady Marina Windsor, 32, is the elder daughter of George Windsor and Sylvana Tomaselli.

The philanthropic executive, 32, who is the third cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, recently shared the news that she is engaged with a series of sweet snaps of herself and now-fiancé Nico Macauley, also 32, on Instagram.

A short caption, reading ‘very happy’ was enough to convey how Marina, the granddaughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, felt about being betrothed to her partner of two years and becoming the future Mrs Macauley.

Lady Marina and Nico, an account executive with Zscaler, have rarely been spotted out together, which has perhaps left fans shocked by the news of the happy engagement.

The royal, who was 25th in line to the British throne before being excluded in 2008 after she was confirmed as a Roman Catholic, was recently spotted at a lavish soirée in Kew Gardens attended by the King and Queen, though her beau was nowhere in sight.

And though he has made a series of loved up appearances on her Instagram page, accompanying captions have often left fans wondering about the nature of their relationship.

In June, all was confirmed with three images showing Lady Marina’s gorgeous engagement ring which was front and centre in all posts.

The silver ring featured what appeared to be a smooth circular onyx gemstone sealed in the centre of the jewel.

Estella and Eloise’s mother, Lady Helen Taylor, is the only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Her first child Columbus George Donald Taylor was born on 6 August, 1994 and is 41st in line to the throne. His brother Cassius Edward Taylor followed on 26 December, 1996.

It was after Lady Helen’s husband battled cancer that the couple announced they were expecting their third child.

Timothy was forced to undergo weekly sessions of chemotherapy at London’s Royal Marsden Hospital after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, but had been in remission for almost two years when Lady Helen fell pregnant for a third time.

They welcomed Eloise Olivia Katherine Taylor on March 2, 2003 and later another daughter Estella Olga Elizabeth Taylor on 21 December 2004 – who are 43rd and 44th in line to the throne.

The two girls came to the attention of the press in June 2011 during the Trooping the Colour when the Duchess of Cambridge appeared enamoured with the pair.

Kate made a point of spending time with the girls, who were eight and six at the time, talking happily with them as the Queen’s official birthday parade and fly-past took place.

She bent down to talk to them and seemed just as interested in the children as she was the royal proceedings.

ALBERT, LEOPOLD AND LOUIS WINDSOR

The three boys are the children of Lord Nicholas Windsor and his wife Paola. Lord Nicholas is the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, a great-grandson of King George V and first cousin once removed of the Queen.

Nicholas, 55, met his future wife, Princess Paola Doimi de Lupis Frankopan Subic Zrinski – who is half- Swedish and half-Croatian – at a party in New York City in 1999 to mark the Millennium and they married seven years later in the Vatican following a civil ceremony in a London register office.

It was the first time that a member of the British Royal Family had married at the Vatican.

They welcomed their first child Albert Louis Philip Edward Windsor, on 22 September 2007 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London. Albert is the eighth grandchild of the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Albert was the first royal baby to be baptised a Catholic since 1688 after an official ceremony in the Queen’s Chapel in St. James’ Palace.

In April 2014, it was announced that the couple was expecting their third child. Many questioned whether Lady Windsor, who was 44 at the time, was in fact the oldest ever royal mother-to-be and friends of the couple were said to have called it a ‘miracle’.

The nearest contender for the title is thought to be the late Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who gave birth to her second son, the Duke of Gloucester, at the age of 42.

Lord Nicholas, 43, forfeited his place in the line to the throne when he converted to Catholicism in 2001, following the example of his mother, Katharine.

The Duchess of Kent, who withdrew from royal duties in 2002, was the first senior royal to convert publicly since the passing of the Act of Settlement in 1701.

The three boys, who were all baptised Catholic, have been removed from the line of succession but had they been in the Church of England, they would be 37th, 38th and 39th respectively. They remain in the line of succession to the Dukedom of Kent, however.
