Galaxy S27 Ultra may trigger the biggest iPhone defeat with variable aperture camera

Samsung Electro-Mechanics would ensure Chinese phones will launch with its most advanced camera next year. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to beat the iPhone 19 (tentative) with a variable aperture zoom camera in 2027.

A new report says Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply its advanced continuous zoom camera to multiple Chinese phone makers next year. The vendors will debut their devices with this advanced image sensor in the second half of 2026.

Chinese makers are likely to return the variable aperture camera to the flagship mainstream next year. The Korean tech giant is looking to expand its image sensor business, and it would impact its Mobile unit with intense competition.

The report suggests Apple is apparently considering using a variable aperture camera in 2027. The iPhone maker is eyeing this upgrade to mark the 20th anniversary of its iPhones; however, it’s just speculation for the time being.

Samsung has reportedly optimized the ISOCELL HP-B camera for Vivo. This sensor is said to feature 200-megapixel resolution and continuous zoom technology. The development of this image sensor is apparently underway.

Samsung Galaxy S10 New update Verizon

ISOCELL HP2 is the first camera with 200-megapixel resolution in Galaxy phones. However, the company’s first and second generation 200MP image sensors have debuted with Motorola and Xiaomi phones before Samsung.

With Chinese vendors aggressively adopting the variable aperture camera and Apple looking to include it as a major upgrade in 2027, Samsung may surely have such an upgrade in its pipeline for its Galaxy S27 Ultra flagship.

An industry insider stated, “There’s a limit to what software alone can do to improve low-light performance. To take smartphone camera competitiveness to the next level, the reintroduction of physical variable aperture is necessary.”

Galaxy S26 Pro and Ultra are reinstating the camera bump in their design philosophy. This design change would help the Korean tech giant include a more modern camera setup it its future flagships in 2027 and beyond.

To recall, the variable aperture camera isn’t a completely new technology for Samsung. The company has already utilized such image sensors in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 series smartphones in 2018 and 2019.
