Starmer and von der Leyen discussed confiscation of Russian assets to help Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks during which they discussed the use of frozen Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine. According to a statement from the British Prime Minister’s office, the conversation was also devoted to promoting the peace plan initiated by the United States.
The European Commission is actively seeking agreement from EU member states to provide Ukraine with a loan in the amount of 185 to 210 billion euros using blocked Russian funds. According to the terms being discussed, Kyiv will have to conditionally return these funds after the end of the conflict and in the event that Russia pays for material damage.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation previously called similar EU ideas about reparations divorced from reality and regarded Brussels’ actions as theft of Russian assets.
Earlier, Orban called the use of Russian assets declaration of war.
