Samsung’s US chip plant gets $250 million grant boost

uaetodaynews

Samsung’s Taylor chip production plant has received $250 million grant to boost the facility development. Governor Greg Abbott announced this grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) during a meeting with a Samsung executive in Taylor.

In 2022, the Korean tech maker broke ground at the Taylor fab plant, located less than 30 minutes from the Texas state capital of Austin. The company is investing $4.73 billion in the Taylor fabrication facility to improve the domestic chip supplies and advanced technology development.

The plant will be used to produce high-tech chips, such as 2-nanometer (nm) and advanced nodes for logic chips. These will be targeting products in the field of 5G, AI, and high-performance computing.

“Samsung has been proud to call Texas home for the past 30 years and is deeply appreciative to the State of Texas and the Governor’s Office for this significant grant award,” said Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and Head of Device Solutions (DS) Division at Samsung Electronics.

Tesla Deal

Samsung had already grabbed a deal from a major industry player – Tesla. The company has signed an agreement to produce Tesla’s next-gen smart car chipset at the Texas fab plant. The deal includes more than $16 billion worth of business between the two companies, and this sum will grow based on future understanding and production of chipsets, according to the Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

For Samsung, this is a breakthrough and could attract more clients at its fab plant in the US. The company will have to keep on improving its technology and yields to revive its foundry business, which is under constant pressure from Taiwan’s TSMC.

However, this deal is still a major push for Samsung’s chip business ambition and Taylor plant’s future.
