Samsung phones need iPhone 17’s bold display flicker switch

Apple iPhone 17 series introduces an excellent display flicker tool, which is a must-have on Samsung Galaxy phones. The latest iPhones come with a new Accessibility feature that lets users stop display flickering with just a toggle.

Earlier this week, Apple launched the iPhone 17 series, bringing key upgrades; among them is a new Accessibility feature that allows users to stop the display flicker issue, which Samsung should add in its Galaxy phones, as well.

Smartphones rely heavily on OLED screens, which have been accused of having a flickering problem for years. Technically, it is called PWM (pulse width modulation), which causes eye strain and even unexpected headaches.

The effect is hard to notice with the naked eye. You may have noticed straight lines hovering across the display in a constant width and speed while recording the display content from a professional camera or smartphone.

Upgrading display hardware is the essential way to address this issue. Chinese OEMs have significantly improved OLEDs to resolve the PWM dimming issue. However, Apple opted for a software trick to get it done easily.

Well, Apple played it smart with its iPhone 17 series, bringing an Accessibility toggle to disable PWM. The menu has a new feature labeled “Display Pulse Smoothing.” Activating it makes the display flicker-free, fixing a long-standing OLED problem.

Apple’s description reads, “Disables pulse width modulation to provide a different way to dim the OLED display, which can create a smoother display output at low brightness levels. Disabling PWM may affect low brightness display performance under certain conditions.”

Samsung phones have more display flickering issues compared to Chinese phones. One UI has features to reduce eye strain caused by the PWM effect; however, an Apple-like solution should be deployed on Galaxy devices.
