Samsung phones may start missing Android patches

uaetodaynews

Your Samsung phone may not get all Android security patches every month. Galaxy phones are powered by One UI, which is based on Android. Google publishes an Android security bulletin every month, but it no longer remains the same.

Google appears to be changing how it handles Android patches. The shift is driven by recent strategic shifts, with the Android maker mentioning no fixes in July 2025’s bulletin and massive 119 fixes in September 2025’s.

For the last 10 years, Google has published monthly Android Security Bulletins listing every vulnerability patched. However, the new policy is heavily inspired by Google’s new Risk-Based Update System (RBUS).

The US tech giant aims to address only “high-risk” vulnerabilities, such as those actively exploited. Other vulnerabilities from categories labeled moderate and low will likely be grouped and provided through quarterly bulletins.

That said, Android updates may make your phones safer and riskier. Monthly patches may continue to arrive, but the content may not be the same. Less vulnerable CVEs would be kept on hold and included in bulletins for months:

  • March
  • June
  • September
  • December

This change doesn’t directly affect Android smartphone users. However, Google’s shift put Samsung’s software testing strategy to a real test. It will be interesting to see how Samsung handles the security patches for Galaxy devices.

Like Google, Samsung also publishes a security bulletin for Galaxy users monthly. It lists all the Android fixes in their respective categories. Besides, Samsung also provides additional SVE items to ensure security for Galaxy users.

Google is reportedly adopting this strategy to help OEMs ship updates for non-flagship devices. Multiple mid-range and budget Galaxy phones get security updates every quarter, so they would benefit from grouped patches.

“Android and Pixel security bulletins are published monthly. To keep users safe, we build powerful security deep into Android’s foundation. Android stops most vulnerability exploitation at the source with extensive platform hardening, like our use of the memory-safe language Rust and advanced anti-exploitation protections. Android and Pixel continuously address known security vulnerabilities and prioritize fixing and patching the highest-risk ones first.” – A Google spokesperson
