Renters stunned over weird strict house rules under their new lease agreement Run

A group of renters have been left stunned after discovering a shockingly strict list of mould-prevention rules buried in their potential new lease.

The detailed agreement, shared to Redditsparked hundreds of furious reactions online and warnings to ‘run for the hills’ before signing.

The document in question outlined an almost obsessive set of expectations from a landlord apparently determined to keep mould at bay.

But to many, the specificity of the demands only raised suspicions that the property was already riddled with mould.

‘I live in Florida so yes, mould is common and I understand wanting to prevent it,’ the would-be tenant explained.

‘But some of these agreements seem a bit concerning. For example, not being allowed to hang-dry clothes indoors – I often hang dry delicates. Is this a violation?’

What followed was an eye-popping list of mould-related dos and don’ts that read more like a cleaning manual than a lease agreement.

The tenant was told to keep closet doors ajar at all times, open blinds daily to let in sunlight, and leave bathroom doors open after showering.

They were instructed to wipe down every surface – including bathroom walls, sink tops and floors – after any contact with water, and were explicitly banned from letting dishes or clothes air dry indoors.

Even indoor plants weren’t spared scrutiny, with renters told to ‘avoid excessive amounts’ of greenery and report any ‘plant watering overflows’ in writing.

The document also required tenants to report musty odours, discolouration of walls, or any visible or suspicious mould immediately.

To many renters, the micromanaging tone of the lease was the biggest red flag.

‘They definitely already have a huge mould problem and want to find someone to foot the bill,’ one commenter wrote.

‘Sounds to me like the landlord painted over mould and, once it inevitably returns, will keep your deposit because: “See? Mould!”‘ another added.

Others said the level of detail was downright bizarre, commenting that it most definitely was not a standard lease.

‘The asks aren’t too crazy, but the specificity of it makes me think there’s a crazy person behind these words.’

As well as being told to keep closet doors ajar at all times, open blinds daily to let in sunlight, and leave bathroom doors open after showering, they also had to avoid hanging clothes to dry indoors

Some renters even speculated that the landlord’s paranoia pointed to existing water damage or a property poorly suited to Florida’s humid climate.

‘If you can’t hang dry clothes or even air-dry dishes, that tells me there’s already something going on,’ another user wrote. ‘Run! Don’t sign.’

But amid the flood of warnings came one unexpectedly educational comment from a self-proclaimed ‘avid plant collector’, who shed light on how even houseplants can worsen mould issues indoors.

‘Plants can cause a lot of damage, unfortunately,’ they explained.

‘The more you have, the harder it is to monitor humidity. It’s not recommended to have household humidity above 45 per cent, but many tropical plants want 60 to 80 – even 100 per cent.’

They went on to advise renters to use a hygrometer device to monitor indoor humidity in the air at all times.

If high-humidity plants are needed, they suggested they be kept in terrariums or grow tents instead.

Their closing advice was to opt for cactuses, as they require little watering, no extra humidity, and pose no risk of roots damaging the carpet.

The viral thread quickly exploded with hundreds of comments from renters who’d experienced similar nightmares, warning that once mould appears in a rental property, it’s nearly impossible to fix, with many landlords often shifting the blame.

In another recent Reddit thread, renters detailed that they’d spotted tufts of bright green grass sprouting from beneath the power sockets when they went for a property inspection.

The would-be tenant posted a photo of two healthy green shoots poking out from the skirting board directly below a power point of the ‘highly sought-after’ rental.

The picture, which looks like something out of a dark housing comedy, quickly caused a stir – sparking a flood of theories, jokes and horror stories from fellow renters.

‘I’ve never seen wall plugs not have a ground,’ one amused commenter quipped

‘The ground is actively growing into place,’ another added.

Others weren’t quite so quick to laugh, with one warning that it could mean major foundation issues.

Some slammed the property’s owners and agents for failing to notice (or care about) the bizarre growth.

‘Doesn’t speak well for whoever is renting it. The electricity is old and dangerous or it would have grounded outlets, and there probably is some kind of problem with damp or there wouldn’t be grass growing in the house.’

Whether it’s harmless seeds or a serious structural issue, one thing’s for sure – the listing has sprouted more questions than answers.
