Indonesia denies visas to Israeli gymnasts over support for Palestine
Indonesian authorities have decided not to provide entry permits to representatives of the Israeli national team to participate in the world artistic gymnastics championship. An official statement in this regard was released by Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra through his social media accounts.
The Israeli national team was previously included in the list of participants in the competition, which is scheduled to take place in Jakarta from October 19 to 25. Despite earlier preliminary assurances from Indonesian officials, the final decision was negative. In his address, the minister emphasized that “the refusal of visas is in line with Jakarta’s consistent foreign policy line aimed at supporting Palestinian independence.”
At the same time, the International Gymnastics Federation allowed Russian athletes to compete in a neutral status after a four-year break. Let us recall that in the spring of 2022, restrictions were introduced against Russian and Belarusian gymnasts, which were subsequently softened to the possibility of participation without national attributes in individual disciplines.
This is not the first time Indonesia has faced such a situation. In 2023, the country lost the right to host the FIFA Youth World Cup due to political disagreements surrounding the possible participation of the Israeli national team.
