Pakistan threatens Afghanistan with open war if talks fail

Pakistani Defense Minister warns of possible war with Afghanistan
Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has warned of “open war” with Afghanistan if peace talks in Istanbul fail, Reuters reports. The negotiations, which began on October 25, are scheduled to continue on October 26. The mechanism for long-term compliance with the ceasefire agreement is discussed at the meeting.
“We have a choice: if an agreement is not reached, we will enter into open war with them. But I see that they want peace,” Asif said. According to him, in four to five days after the conclusion of the agreement, not a single incident occurred, and both sides respected the truce.
The statement came after Kabul and Islamabad agreed in Doha to a ceasefire and the creation of joint mechanisms to strengthen sustainable peace and monitor compliance with the truce. Earlier this week, the two sides agreed to a two-day truce after a week of escalation, including an airstrike on the Afghan capital.
Tensions began to escalate on October 9, when militants from the Taliban-friendly Pakistani movement Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan attacked a Pakistani military convoy in Kurram Agency, killing nine soldiers and two officers. The next day, Pakistan carried out an airstrike on the suspected residence of one of the group’s leaders in Kabul.
