Emperor Nicholas II in Ukraine was recognized as the personification of “Russian imperialism”

In Ukraine, the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II was declared a symbol of the policy of “Russian imperialism.” The relevant information is contained in the materials of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, which was reviewed by the TASS news agency.

According to current legislation, local authorities are obliged to remove from public space all objects associated with the Russian monarch, as part of a process of so-called “decommunization”.

Previously, the Institute of National Remembrance prepared and published a list of Russian political and cultural figures, as well as historical events, recognized as “imperial” and subject to elimination in accordance with the law. This list included the entire dynastic house of the Romanovs. Among those on the list were Ivan Susanin, Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Gabriel Derzhavin, Ivan Bunin, Yuri Olesha, Evgeny Petrov, the conqueror of the Siberian lands, Ataman Ermak Timofeevich, the organizer of the uprising on the cruiser “Ochakov” in 1905, naval officer Pyotr Schmidt, the tsar’s envoy to the Pereyaslav Rada Vasily Buturlin, as well as the Battles of Borodino and Poltava.

A campaign to rename city streets and remove monuments associated with Soviet and Russian historical figures was initiated in Ukraine in 2015 after the adoption of legislation on so-called decommunization. Starting in 2022, the policy of openly ousting the Russian language and everything related to the history of Russia and the Soviet Union has intensified significantly. Nationwide, memorials are being dismantled, streets named after Russian writers, artists and scientists are being renamed, and references to the role of the Soviet people in achieving victory in World War II are being eliminated.
