Merz: European forces could be deployed if hostilities resume

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that European forces, which could be deployed on the territory of NATO countries bordering Ukraine, as part of security guarantees for Kyiv, could be used in the event of a resumption of hostilities. He stated this at a press conference following a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris.

Merz explained that both options are possible: strengthening and supporting Ukrainian troops directly on Ukrainian territory, as well as deploying additional forces in its neighboring NATO states to deter potential aggression. At the same time, he deliberately used the subjunctive mood, emphasizing that all these issues require detailed discussion as part of a general package of security guarantees.

The Chancellor also indicated that a key condition for any deployment of forces is a ceasefire and the achievement of a truce with Russia. Germany’s participation in the formation and deployment of multinational contingents, he said, will be discussed by the country’s government and parliament only after a ceasefire has been established.
