A California man is accused of killing a 71-year-old sex offender and then telling police it was “really fun.”

Varun Suresh, 29, is now facing multiple charges, including murder, residential burglary and armed individual causing great bodily injury, according to a release from the Fremont Police Department.

Those charges all stem from a fatal incident that occurred on Thursday, Sept. 18, when Suresh allegedly tracked down David Brimmer after finding his name, photo and address while searching an online registry of sex offenders, Fremont police said.

Suresh allegedly told authorities that pedophiles “deserve to die” after the attack, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

The Los Angeles Times reported in 1992 that Brimmer was charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious behavior with minor boys between the ages of 9 and 15 while serving as a pastor at the Jubilee Christian Center.

Suresh allegedly told police that he selected his victim based on his age, meaning that he was “someone who is easy to kill,” according to the affidavit.

He then allegedly traveled to his victim’s neighborhood, saying that he believed Brimmer would be monitoring the neighborhood for people looking to kill him. The suspect also told police he posed as an accountant and began going door-to-door so as not to appear suspicious before arriving at Brimmer’s residence, per the affidavit.

Once there, Suresh began speaking to the man and then, after he had confirmed it was in fact Brimmer, he allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked the man.

The affidavit also stated that Brimmer somehow managed to outrun Suresh and made it to a neighbor’s house, where the victim began pounding on the garage until he was let into the home. Suresh then allegedly fought his way into the house and cornered Brimmer in the kitchen, where he repeatedly and violently stabbed the man with a knife as the homeowner screamed at him to stop.

Brimmer eventually made his way out of the home and onto the front lawn, where he collapsed due to blood loss.

“Within minutes, officers arrived on scene and located an unresponsive 71-year-old male victim on the ground,” the FPD said, per the release. “The victim was suffering from significant stab wounds. Officers immediately administered trauma care; however, the victim passed away on the scene.”

Suresh reportedly remained at the scene and spoke to officers. “I’m hoping that because [the victim is] a pedophile… like, everyone hates pedophiles… so like, it should be cool. It should be cool,” he allegedly told officers, per the affidavit.

According to the police, Suresh later added that he “didn’t feel sad at all” and thought the murder was “honestly really fun.”

Suresh is now in custody and will be undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, according to court records.
