Man Killed Wife, Sat Beside Her Body in SUV Until Police Arrived

An Indiana man who shot and killed his wife at close range in their SUV in a cemetery and sat with her bloody corpse inside the vehicle has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for her murder.

In August, Jeremy Hinson, 49, of Anderson, was convicted of the 2024 murder of his wife, Michela Hinson, 47, the Madison County Prosecutor said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Judge David Happe sentenced Hinson to 55 years in prison for murder and 20 years for a felony firearm enchancement, according to a news release from the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office.

He will serve the sentences consecutively.

The grisly crime came to light on June 26, 2024, when police received a call about a “suspicious vehicle” in the Forrestville Cemetery in Elmwood, north of Indianapolis, WTHR reports.

A witness had called 911 to report seeing an unresponsive man and a woman inside a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee when the caller knocked on the window, police said.

Officers found Michaela dead in the driver’s seat. Jeremy was initially unresponsive in the front passenger seat, court documents said, WTHR reports.

Jeremy had blood splatter on his forehead, eye, arms, hands and legs, according to court documents.

Upon hearing the officers knock on the window, Jeremy unlocked the SUV and got out. He was found carrying a gun in a holster when he was patted down and a magazine in his pants pocket, police said.

Police found shell casings on the floor of the SUV. 

Michela was shot in the chest and abdomen. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy showed she had been shot seven times at close range, court records show, WIBC reports.

Jeremy was taken to a local hospital for observation for a potential overdose, the court documents said.

After the murder, a family member visited Jeremy in jail, where he was recorded on video confessing to killing Michela, court records show, WTHR reports.

“I feel most bad for the boys,” he said, the court documents show.

He said, “Obviously, I wasn’t thinking right. I don’t know what happened to make me do that, but tell them I love them.” 

Michaela was the mother of two boys and worked as a bus driver for the Anderson Schools and the City of Anderson Transit System, according to her obituary.

Hinson was taken to a state correctional facility where he will serve his sentence.
