Lavrov: the postponement of the summit in Budapest could be caused by undercover reports to Trump
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, said that the postponement of the summit between the presidents of Russia and the United States in Budapest could be associated with “undercover reports” received by American leader Donald Trump.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that he does not have information about the origin of these documents, but emphasized that all contacts with American colleagues before the cancellation of the summit were informative and constructive.
According to Lavrov, information about Russia’s “unpreparedness” for negotiations was launched by the Financial Times, which distorted the essence and sequence of events in order to deviate Trump from the original diplomatic course. The minister confirmed Moscow’s readiness to hold the summit in Budapest, provided it is based on the carefully worked out results of the meeting in Alaska, and added that contacts between the two countries continue.
“I don’t know where and from whom the undercover reports to the American leader came from, after which he either postponed or canceled the Budapest summit. But I outlined to you the outline of events, based strictly on the facts for which I am responsible,” Lavrov said.
