After 16 years of working on women’s magazines, I’ve been lucky enough to try a lot of beauty products – some of them bizarre (I don’t think I’ll bother with eyebrow stamps or charcoal toothpaste again) – but many of them brilliant.
Being in the lovely position of getting to try skincare, make-up and hair products for free, I know an item is really good when I happily go out and buy it again with my own money. From Elemis Cleansing Balm to Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream, there are plenty of products that fall into this category, and Black Friday is a great time to buy them, with hefty discounts on big brands.
John Lewis is one of the high street retailers embracing Black Friday this year, and the beauty department is awash with excellent bargains. From body creams to mascaras, hair tools to lip liners, here are some of the best grooming buys I’ve got on my list right now.

I’ve been looking to upgrade my hair dryer for ages, and whenever I use one of Dyson’s designs in a hotel or gym I am impressed with its speed and relative quietness. I’d love to find one under the tree this Christmas!

I first heard about Hourglass from a make-up artist (she was obsessed with the brand’s mascaras). This waterproof eyeliner comes in five shades and is great for budge-proof definition.
I initially tried this product when I had my worst hangover of the past decade, and couldn’t believe the difference it made to my face. Turns you from gaunt to glowing in seconds.

A good brush can make all the difference when it comes to your make-up application. I’m a particular fan of this double-ended one, which has transformed my concealer application for the better.
Along with many other beauty writers, this is my go-to moisturiser on a winter day. It’s rich and hydrating but not too heavy, and contains a handy SPF top-up.
With a smell that transports you straight to Brazil and gorgeously buttery finish, this body cream is a cult buy for a reason.
