Google Messages may soon give users a new option to remove group chat icons. Right now, if you set a picture as the group chat icon, you can change it to another picture, but you cannot remove it completely. The group chat will always show some icon.
A recent test of the latest Google Messages beta app by Android Authority found a new feature that lets users remove the group chat icon and go back to the default look. The default icon shows four small pictures of group members in a grid.
In the new beta version, when you tap the group chat icon in the group details, it opens in full screen. There, you will see a new menu with an option called “Remove group icon.” If you tap this and confirm, the group chat will lose the custom icon and return to the simple default grid of four avatars.

This is a small but useful change because many people want to keep their group chats simple without a custom photo. Before, once you picked a group icon, you had to keep that picture there and could not reset it.
We don’t know yet if or when this option to remove group chat icons will be available to all users. But this change shows that Google is working on making the app better and easier to use.
