Germany, if there is a shortage of volunteers, will draft by lot

Bild: German men of a certain age will undergo a medical examination
Germany’s ruling parties have reached a compromise on the military service reform bill. As the Bild newspaper reports, citing sources, the CDU/CSU and SPD factions have agreed on a new model, according to which all men of a certain age will be required to undergo a medical examination.
Recruitment into the army will remain on a voluntary basis, however, in the event of a shortage of recruits to achieve the target numbers of the Bundeswehr, conscription by lot will be introduced among those who have passed a medical examination. Details of the compromise will be discussed at extraordinary meetings of factions on November 13.
The German Ministry of Defense plans to increase the number of armed forces from the current 183 thousand to 260 thousand military personnel by 2035. Earlier, on August 27, the German government had already adopted the bill of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on voluntary service, but its consideration in the Bundestag was suspended due to the demands of the CDU/CSU to clearly spell out the conditions for a possible return to military service. Conservatives are confident that such a step in the future is inevitable.
Let us recall that compulsory conscription in Germany was abolished in July 2011, after which the country switched to a contract army.
