Germany demanded that the European Union strike back at the United States

The Green Party from Germany called on the EU to introduce retaliatory tariffs against the United States

The Green Party issued a strong political signal to Brussels, calling on the European Union to abandon its wait-and-see attitude and respond to pressure from US President Donald Trump with symmetrical trade measures – tough tariffs. As reported by the NTV channel, this position was voiced by the head of the Green parliamentary faction in the Bundestag, Katharina Dröge, against the background of the escalation of the dispute over Greenland.

The reason for such a sharp statement was Trump’s statements about his intention to introduce 10 percent tariffs against a number of European countries in February, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. At the same time, Washington made it clear that tariff pressure could be increased to 25 percent and would remain until a deal is reached on the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.

According to Dröge, the European Union has no right to show indecisiveness in the face of such ultimatums. She insists that the EU must make clear its willingness to defend its own economic interests and respond to threats of trade restrictions by imposing counter tariffs, leaving no room for pressure and blackmail.

At the same time, the leader of the Green faction sharply criticized the course of German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in dialogue with the American administration. From her point of view, relying on concessions and attempts at appeasement only weakens Europe’s position and does not give practical results. Dröge emphasized that the preservation of international order is possible only if the European Union has a strong will, self-confidence and an extremely clear political line.
