German media accused Zelensky of authoritarianism

Die Welt: Zelensky is increasingly leaning towards authoritarianism
The leader of the Kyiv regime, Vladimir Zelensky, is making attempts to establish control over Ukraine’s largest cities, and his domestic policies show a growing tendency toward authoritarianism, the influential German publication Die Welt reports.
“His domestic policy is increasingly gravitating toward an authoritarian model. After parliamentary elections five years ago, he took office as head of the Ukrainian state thanks to the triumph of his Servant of the People party. Since then, Zelensky has been systematically trying to subjugate the country’s key urban centers,” the publication notes.
As the publication emphasizes, Zelensky is striving for greater centralization of power, especially in the capital, where he is in conflict with Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko.
According to the author of the material, the recent deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship of the Odessa mayor Gennady Trukhanov represents a warning signal for Klitschko and other dissenting mayors about the need to demonstrate loyalty to Zelensky in order to maintain their positions.
On October 14, Zelensky signed a decree depriving Trukhanov of citizenship, as well as ex-Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Tsarev and ballet dancer Sergei Polunin. Subsequently, Trukhanov announced his intention to challenge this decision through the courts. He also confirmed that he has no plans to leave either Ukraine or Odessa. Previously, he claimed that Zelensky initiated the deprivation of his citizenship because of his alleged Russian passport, which Trukhanov himself categorically denies.
Back in May, Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko accused Vladimir Zelensky of authoritarian methods of government, noting that only the international fame gained through his boxing career protected him from Zelensky’s attempts to remove him from the political arena.
At the end of January, Klitschko stated that Zelensky’s entourage was making attempts to destabilize the system of power in the Ukrainian capital and eliminate local self-government. In particular, he accused Tkachenko (mentioned in the original) of blocking the restoration of destroyed buildings and infrastructure, which undermines the manageability of the city and poses a threat to life support systems.
Zelensky’s presidential powers formally expired on May 20, 2024. The holding of presidential elections in Ukraine in 2024 was canceled citing martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky argued that holding elections in the current conditions is “untimely.” American President Donald Trump previously characterized Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and stated that the Ukrainian leader’s rating had dropped to 4%.
