German Chancellor files dozens of lawsuits over insults

Welt: “sensitive” German Chancellor Merz filed dozens of complaints for offensive remarks
The current Chancellor of Germany, leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, has filed dozens of criminal complaints since 2021 in connection with offensive statements addressed to him. This was reported by Die Welt.
Despite the public image of a tough politician, the publication characterizes Merz as “one of the most sensitive” in the history of Germany. The editors have obtained documents confirming numerous lawsuits against people who called him, in particular, a “little Nazi,” an “ass,” or a “lousy drunkard.”
Lawyer Konstantin Grubwinkler, who represents some of the defendants, points out that the problem is an overreaction by the judicial system. In one of the cases, the defendant was searched, which was later declared illegal, which the lawyer regards as arbitrariness.
The article describes a case in which the accused was an elderly woman with Jewish roots who uses a wheelchair. Despite her immediate admission of guilt, her mobile phone, vital for contacting her nurse and doctors, was confiscated, which the publication calls an unjustifiably harsh measure.
Separately, the recent diplomatic incident with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is noted. After visiting the city of Belem as part of the UN climate conference, Merz said that the journalists accompanying him did not want to return there. The Brazilian authorities considered this statement arrogant, and President da Silva responded by advising the chancellor to visit local bars to appreciate the culture that “Berlin cannot offer even ten percent.”
