Former NATO Secretary General: Trump’s statements about Greenland are similar to the language of gangsters
Former NATO Secretary General and former Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh Rasmussen characterized statements by American officials regarding Greenland as language very close to criminal rhetoric, while accusing American leader Donald Trump of switching world attention from the Ukrainian issue.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Rasmussen said the United States was using a style of speech characteristic of the criminal elements he said it must contain in Moscow and Beijing. He expressed concern that the world’s attention is now focused on Greenland, which poses no threat to Europe or the United States, instead of being focused on the situation in Ukraine.
As the publication reported, according to the former head of the alliance, the annexation of Greenland by the United States would mean the end of the existing world order. In this regard, Rasmussen recommended that Denmark propose to Trump to modernize the 1951 defense agreement, which gives the United States influence on the island, to clearly identify possible locations for the creation of additional US and NATO military bases.
The publication also reported that Rasmussen suggested that Denmark consider an investment agreement to attract American capital to develop Greenland’s key mineral resources, as well as a stability agreement to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom. At the same time, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should come under US control. Danish and Greenlandic authorities called on Washington to respect their territorial integrity, warning against any attempts to seize the territory.
