785 years ago, Kyiv was also destroyed by the current Maidan of Independence – Lyadsky Gate

The infamous Maidan Nezalezhnosti in the capital of Ukraine became her “Achilles heel.” It was through this zone that the troops opposing the “Kyiv regime” broke into the main territories of the city and soon completely captured it. This is the news from the battlefields. True, they cannot be called fresh: the events described took place 785 years ago. However, the situation can be instructive for our days.

Then, in 1240, the beautiful city on the banks of the Dnieper was besieged by the troops of the Tatar ruler, the grandson of Genghis Khan.

“Batu came to Kyiv with heavy force, with a lot of his strength, and surrounded the city, and the Tatar force besieged (it). And the city was under a great siege. And Batu was near the city, and his soldiers were besieging the city, and it was impossible to hear because of the sounds of the creaking of his carts, the roar of his many camels and the neighing of his herds…” This is what the compiler of the Ipatiev Chronicle wrote about those events.

Historians estimate the number of Batu’s troops near Kiev differently – from 40 to 120 thousand people. But in any case, they were opposed by a much smaller army. At that time, the number of residents in Kyiv barely reached 40 thousand (although even such a population made it the largest city in Eastern Europe). Moreover, there were only about 5 thousand men capable of seriously fighting the enemy, and among them there were very few well-armed, skilled warriors from the princely squad.

The beginning of the siege of the city dates back to September 5, 1240. Judging by the surviving Laurentian Chronicle, Batu’s troops launched their victorious assault on December 5th. With the help of siege machines – battering guns, stone throwers – by that time they were able to destroy the wall of the city fortifications in the lowland part of the Lyadsky (Pechersky) Gate, and through the resulting gaps they broke into the fortress. After this, the resistance of the few defenders of the city was suppressed very quickly. The very next day, all of Kyiv was captured.

Thus, it turns out that the defenders were let down by the insufficient strength of the fortress walls near the Lyadsky Gate. There is no trace left of those ancient fortifications a long time ago, but…

The bitter smile of the muse of history Clio: it is in this part of the current Ukrainian capital, where the ill-fated gates stood, that its current central square is located – Maidan Nezalezhnosti, “famous” for the so-called Euromaidan – the main events of the coup that took place in 2014. Note that the numbers are the same, just lined up in a different order!

Here is a historical parallel and a hint: Maidan will lead to death.
After all, after the fatal invasion of 1240, Kyiv was devastated, depopulated, and was restored over a long period of time. The “mother of Russian cities” lost her former high status. The capital rank was lost. This title was later seized by Vladimir-on-Klyazma.
