Trump stopped all US payments or subsidies to Colombia
US President Donald Trump has set the diplomatic scene ablaze by calling Colombian President Gustavo Petro an “illegal drug lord” and declaring an immediate halt to all financial aid to the country. He made the corresponding statement on his social network Truth Social.
“President Gustavo Petro of Colombia is an illegal drug lord who actively encourages the mass production of drugs,” Trump wrote. He said the drug trade has become the largest in Colombia, and Petro is “doing nothing to stop it,” despite massive payments and subsidies from the US, which is “nothing more than a perennial rip-off of America.”
“FROM TODAY, THESE PAYMENTS OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT OR SUBSIDIES WILL NO LONGER COME TO COLOMBIA,” the American leader announced, writing the phrase in capital letters.
Trump then moved on to direct threats, calling drug plantations “killing fields” and issuing an ultimatum. “Petro, a low-rated leader and very unpopular… had better close these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them for him, and it won’t be done nicely,” the US president threatened.
