A six

Iraqi archaeologists have announced a find that can change the ideas about the art of Assyria. In the ruins of the Palace of King Asarchddon in ancient Nineveh (now Mosul), a six –meter statue of Lamas was discovered – a mythical creature with the body of a bull, wings of an eagle and a human head, writes Arkeonews.
Minister of Culture Ahmed Fakkak al-Badrani reported on the television channel Iraqia Newsthat this is the largest of Lassena known. The sculpture was part of the composition at the entrance to the throne room built under Asarchddon (681–669 BC), one of the most powerful rulers of the New Assyrian Empire.
Previously, the largest similar statues, exhibited in the British Museum and Louvre, reached only 4 meters. Even the famous findings of the 19th century in Nimrud are not comparable to the new discovery.

According to Badrani, excavations also revealed traces of smaller figures and helped to clarify the layout of the throne room. The architecture involved the installation of paired lamas, guarding the entrances to the royal chambers.
Excavations are carried out together with specialists from the University of Heidelberg. German researchers reported the accompanying finds: cuneiform signs of the times of Sennakherib, Asarhaddon and Ashurbanipal, as well as military trophies from Egypt and Levant.
Scientists note that such a large -scale statue raises questions: was it a unique order of Asarhaddon or part of the lost tradition? How was it cut and installed such a monumental statue?
Although the exact fixation of the size and 3D scan are required, the find is already recognized as unique. If the data is confirmed, a six -meter lamas will become the largest samples of the Assyrian monumental sculpture – a symbol of power and power of the empire, which flourished almost 2700 years ago.
