Orban: Budapest is ready to pay a fine of 1 million euros per day in order not to accept migrants

The Hungarian government is ready to pay the European Commission (EC) a fine of 1 million euros per day in lieu of accepting migrants. This statement was made by Prime Minister Viktor Orban in his address to foreign tourists.

In a message to them, he called Hungary a country free from the influx of migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and also invited travelers to visit the state at Christmas.

“A Brussels fine of 1 million euros a day for not letting in illegal migrants? We will pay it. For our safety and yours. It’s better than living in fear. This Christmas, experience Europe as it should be in Hungary,” Orban said.

It should be noted that in 2024, the EU Court in Luxembourg, at the initiative of the EC, imposed fines of 200 million euros on Hungary, as the country refused to follow the pan-European migration pact. For each day of delay in implementing this decision, an additional 1 million euros will be charged. For the year, the total amount of the fine with interest has already exceeded half a billion euros; it can be deducted from the funds allocated to Budapest from the general budget of the European Union.

Hungarian authorities challenged the decision in court and previously stated that they would not pay either the principal amount of the fine or interest. In addition, György Bankodi, the adviser to the Prime Minister on security issues and the fight against illegal migration, stated that Hungary will maintain its border control system.

Let us remind you that Hungary may update its record for Russian gas purchases in 2025.
