“Unfortunately, this is a new reality we are looking into, with someone who wants to create destabilization, I can’t say who it is,” he said, adding Denmark was in “an arms race against time” to strengthen its drone-repelling capabilities.

Poulsen said Denmark was communicating with NATO and considering activating Article 4 to convene the alliance’s member countries for urgent talks.

Danish defense chief Michael Hyldgaard, who was also at the press conference, defended the military’s decision not to shoot down the drones, saying they were “ready” to do so “but decided not to do it.”

“You can’t just run around and shoot up into the air, because what we shoot up comes back down,” he said. “It doesn’t help to shoot down one drone with the amount we’ve seen here. It’s about capturing data, and we’re going to find the people who are behind this.”

In another statement, Danish police in the country’s south said “several drones with lights were observed” at Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Skrydstrup, but it was not “possible to take down the drones or find the drone operators,” and those three airports were not closed. Skrydstrup is an air base and hosts Denmark’s fleets of F-16 and F-35 jets.

Billund Airport, which is one of Denmark’s busiest cargo centers, was closed for about an hour after a drone sighting and quickly reopened, authorities said.
