The three new items from IKEA set to sell out FOREVER – including the must-have piece with a hidden feature

The three new items from IKEA set to sell out FOREVER – including the must-have piece with a hidden feature

It’s not often you hear about IKEA selling out of its products, but the new Gustaf Westman collection has attracted huge queues around the world – and it’s finally landing in Australia.

Set your alarm clocks, as the 12-piece tableware and objects are set to drop from 10am on Monday, September 29. Due to overwhelming demand, it’s a first come, first serve – and there will be a maximum limit of two of each item per customer.

The Swedish interior designer, famous for his iconic Curvy Mirror, has created a whimsical range featuring bold, playful colours, sculptural shapes, wavy silhouettes and that signature Scandinavian charm – with a twist.

I was one of the lucky few in the world invited to get a first look at IKEA’s new designer collection in South Korea.

On launch day in Seoul, we visited an IKEA store to get our hands on the new pieces. Every item is gorgeous and there’s a heartwarming story behind his designs. The top three standouts were quickly added to my shopping cart: a stunning spiral bouncy vase, porcelain dining plates and a lantern with a hidden feature.

And his statement pieces truly reflect his down-to-earth, quirky personality as Gustaf revealed the one design rule he loves to break.

‘I always have fun while designing. You can have humour in your design, I feel that’s something I do,’ he told Daily Mail.

I couldn’t help myself and snapped up my favourite Gustaf Westman goodies at IKEA in South Korea before they sold out.

The portable lantern wasn’t on my mind until Gustaf showed us its cool hidden feature in person, which left my jaw dropping. What I love is its unique round, layered body that twists to transform into an expanded ‘orbital’ shape.

The versatile pink gadget, which can be used both indoors and outdoors, has been a fan favourite globally – even selling out instantly after launching in stores. It looks great as a lamp on a bedside table or styled on a coffee table. Plus, you can use it as a lantern outdoors. Bonus: it’s rechargeable, too.

‘Sweden is so dark in winter, it barely gets light. I grew up in the middle of the forest and there are always days when my dad asked me to go out and grab something from the garden and it’s pitch dark, so I wanted to make a lantern,’ Gustaf told us at the launch in Seoul behind his lantern inspiration.

‘So I worked a lot on that to make it a fun idea for an (outdoor) lantern that you can also place on your sideboard inside your home so that’s the idea behind it.’

The first time I saw a picture of Gustaf’s vase, which is made from a single metal spiral that twists into an hourglass spring silhouette, holding a separate glass vessel, I knew I needed it in my life.

And I can confirm, it’s just as stunning in person. I’m obsessed with how the flowers can weave through its pastel pink coils.

‘First of all, I think it’s fun that there’s two kinds of useless objects that together create this vase,’ Gustaf said.

‘It’s a spiral and a glass vase, and they need each other to work. Otherwise they’re both useless, but together they make a fun vase.’

The coolest part of the vase is that the spiral bounces when you put your flowers in.

I’m in my dinner party hosting era so I’m always on the lookout for new kitchenware pieces to style my table. I love the new porcelain plates (forest green and bubble gum pink), particularly as they’re designed to fit together like pieces of a mosaic.

Speaking to Daily Mail, Gustaf said if he could only choose one product from his IKEA collection, it would be the porcelain dining plates – a must-have piece.

‘The plate has its own family members, obviously they look so similar,’ he said.

‘The meatball plate and the two candle holders together create a mosaic on the table so you can put them together.’

IKEA kindly gifted me a pink porcelain cup and saucer set, and I loved it so much I ran into a store to buy the matching green version for my home.

What drew me to the piece is its intentionally oversized saucer. Why? As Gustaf said he deliberately designed the saucer bigger than usual so he could fit as many biscuits as possible all around.

The extra space provides ample room for snacks – a simple solution he wished he’d had growing up so he could fit his grandmother’s moreish homemade cookies.

‘The cup has a very extra big saucer because when I grew up, my grandma always made many different cookies on Christmas and she’d get mad if I didn’t take one of each,’ Gustaf said.

‘So the big saucer is to put cookies and you can use the cup to drink mulled wine or espresso in the middle.’

IKEA Australia is set to unveil the new 12-piece collection of tableware and home objects, created in collaboration with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman

The statement pieces will be part of IKEA’s annual Christmas line-up called VINTERFINT

Gustaf Westman – a household name in the interior design world – has reimagined the classic red and green palette by incorporating playful shades of bubble gum pink and baby blue

I didn’t have much room in my luggage (don’t ask me how many times I had to increase my baggage allowance due to my excessive shopping spree in Korea)… so I couldn’t bring the blue meatball plate back to Australia with me.

But it’s so quirky and definitely worth a mention here because I know Gustaf Westman fans and interior collectors will love it.

‘We kind of have the same food at whatever celebration we have, and I’m a super picky eater and I basically only eat meatballs,’ Gustaf explained.

‘I felt like I wanted to do something like a plate where the meatball has its own little throne on the table so that was basically the idea.’

So how many IKEA meatballs can the plate fit? Gustaf laughed as he confirmed: Ten.

‘It’s called a meatball plate but you can use it for whatever,’ he said, revealing he used the plate to serve kimchi at a Korean BBQ restaurant during his tour in Seoul.

I was lucky to get access to the Gustaf Westman x IKEA collection in South Korea. I couldn’t help myself and snapped up all the goodies before they sold out. These are the must-have pieces I brought back to Australia – and I recommend all of them!

As part of IKEA’s annual Christmas line-up called VINTERFINT, the 12 pieces will go on sale in-store and online (delivery only, no click & collect) across Australia from 10am on September 29.

Due to shipping delays, some products in the Gustaf Westman collection will not be on sale in store at IKEA Perth and Adelaide from September 29.

Perth and Adelaide customers can still shop for the full Gustaf Westman product range online and choose home delivery.

Customers should check the IKEA website for both in-store and online availability updates, as this collection is expected to sell out quickly.
