Summer’s not over yet! The sunbed wars continue as Britons are seen running and ‘pushing’ to reserve their loungers in Turkey
The sunbed wars have continued into September as Britons were filmed running to a poolside in Turkey in a desperate attempt to reserve loungers.
Dayna flew from Britain to the five-star Prime Beach Hotel in Marmaris, this month for a relaxing break when she saw dozens of holidaymakers sprinting to the pool from her balcony.
The tourists were seen rushing over to the deck chairs and tossing their beach towels over each one in a bid to reserve their poolside spot for the day.
Some were seen claiming multiple sunbeds for their entire family as they all woke up at the crack of dawn when the destination opened to secure their space.
Dayna captioned her video: ‘Sunbed wars at 8am @Prime Beach Hotel. This was our only fault of the hotel, we have NEVER had this problem ever!!
‘Yes, that’s my partner running for front row sunbeds every morning, we had no choice!’
At one point, one woman is heard saying: ‘Get off me. What are you doing? Why are you pushing me for?’ She then appeared to have an argument with another person over a bed as they both reached the sun lounger at the same time.
The video racked up more than 31,000 likes and thousands of comments, with one writing: ‘This only happens at the cheap hotels.’

Another penned: ‘This was me today. And I ended up in a fight with someone.’ A third said: ‘Reserving sunbeds they won’t use until 3pm.’
A fourth commented: ‘We were here last month. It’s a lovely hotel. But the sunbed situation was awful.’
The fight for sunbeds appears to have gotten so bad that lifeguards at some destinations are now removing towels and stacking them on a pile, so other holidaymakers can sit beside the pool without fear of taking someone else’s ‘reserved’ place.
Nicole, who makes TikTok videos about travelling, flew to Lake Garda in Italy and said on the platform: ‘I absolutely love it.
‘You know how people get up early and put their towels on the sunbeds? Well, at this hotel the lifeguard goes round and takes all the towels off the sunbeds.’
She then showed a plastic chair stacked to the top with different towels that sneaky tourists had used to try and claim their seat.
And it appears that loungers are not the only poolside accessory in demand.
Jay Whitfield, from Devon, went on holiday abroad with her partner and admitted that she took a parasol belonging to another sun lounger as there were not enough provided.

‘I had to admit, I have joined in with the sunbed wars this morning,’ she said. ‘We’ve come down from breakfast, can you see all these empty sunbeds that have towels on them but nobody on them? There’s not enough people in this pool to be filling all of these sunbeds.
‘That whole section over there stays in the shade until around lunchtime and it’s around 10am. We’ve not had an umbrella the whole time we’ve been here. It’s day three and we’ve not had an umbrella which is really annoying because Si hates it in the sun.
‘So I went over there and grabbed one of the umbrellas. But I am expecting someone really angry to come down from their room, or breakfast or wherever they are looking for their umbrella, but it’s tough s***, they’re sat in the shade!’
Jay said that they have been able to get sunbeds every day, but said their latest challenge is getting a parasol, adding that some loungers have two umbrellas between them, despite nobody sitting at them.
‘If you’re not here, I have every right to take them,’ she said.
The reignition of the sun lounger debate comes as the UK regions with the worst offenders for sunbed snatchers was revealed – with the West Midlands topping the list.
Brits who live in this area are most likely to get up early when they’re on holiday in order to reserve their sunbed.
This was closely followed by people living in England’s North West and North East, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The results come from a YouGov survey of more than 2,500 UK adults, who were asked about their part in the so-called ‘sunbed wars’.

Region | % of those of admit to waking up early to reserve a lounger |
---|---|
West Midlands | 15 |
Wales | 13 |
North East England | 13 |
North West England | 13 |
Northern Ireland | 13 |
East of England | 12 |
London | 12 |
South East England | 12 |
East Midlands | 10 |
Scotland | 10 |
Yorkshire and the Humber | 8 |
South West England | 8 |
Those living in the South West and Yorkshire and the Humber are least likely to spring out of bed to snatch a lounger.
Across the UK, 12 per cent of those asked admitted to this behaviour – with people in Northern Ireland and Wales just above the UK average, and Scotland coming in at 10 per cent.
Though over one in ten revealed this habit, it marks a decrease from the 72 per cent who admitted doing so five years ago, according to GetYourGuide, an online marketplace for travel activities.
Benjy Potter, a spokesperson for the company, said this shows that ‘the days of getting up at the crack of dawn to simply sit are fading fast’ – though footage on social media from this summer shows the dawn scramble is very much still a thing.
