Seeing double! Meryl Streep hugs Anna Wintour at Milan Fashion show (and there’s even a royal in attendance!)

When the Devil Wears Prada was released in 2006it painted a less than flattering picture of Anna Wintour.

The cult film, based on the book written three years prior by Anna’s  former assistant Lauren Weisberger, shows Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, a demanding, cruel boss at the top of the world’s biggest fashion magazine.

While the book is fiction, it’s clearly inspired by Wintour – who herself called it ‘a fair shot’.

Which is why fans have been left so delighted by Meryl Streep sharing a hug with Anna Wintour after Dolce & Gabbana’s show at Milan Fashion Week on Saturday.

The actress, 76, is currently filming in the city for the upcoming sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2, reprising her role as the straight-talking fashion head, Miranda Priestly.

Meryl took pride of place perched at the front row of the Spring/Summer 2026 show alongside co-star Stanley Tucci, 64, who also starred in the first film in 2006.

Two worlds collided when Meryl and Anna were filmed sharing a sweet hug at the end of the show during a catch-up.

Anna was seen leaning in to embrace the actress before pausing to have a chat with her. The moment was shared by Vogue Magazine on Instagram.

Simone Ashleywho will be playing a new role in the upcoming sequel, was also seated behind the fictional fashion duo and was pictured with them at the end of the show.

Prior to their meeting on Saturday, reports have suggested that the pair share a good relationship; their hug seemed to confirm they are on good terms.

Meryl was seen in full Miranda attire in a long, latex camel coat and leopard print clutch bag.

Living up to Anna’s classic look, Meryl also wore a pair of white-rimmed shades and her characters signature white-gray cropped hairstyle.

As she walked into the packed-out stage, Meryl made her way to her seat and seemed to ignore the deafening crowd who screamed and clapped with excitement at being in the presence of the fictional editor-in-chief.

Meanwhile, Anna looked effortlessly stylish in colourful, floral dress with snakeskin boots and her typical black sunglasses.

Elsewhere, Stanley Tucci, 64, looked dapper in a blue three-piece suit, with a patterned tie, smart shoes and sunglasses.

As the Dolce & Gabbana show began, the pair could be seen reprising their roles, looking on and observing the fashion being presented in front of them.

Film fans could hardly contain their excitement at being part of the action, with several sharing behind-the-scenes snaps from the wings.

Lady Kitty Spencer, 34, who is Princess Diana’s niece and Princes William and Harry’s cousin, was also seen talking to Meryl after the show.

Sharing pictures of the moment on Instagram, the model posted a slideshow of images from the event.

Kitty, who looked elegant in a black lace dress, flashed a glamorous smile as she posed next to Meryl.

Kitty’s dress, which featured long sheer sleeves and a daring neckline, was layered beneath large oversized leather jacket and accessorised with a pair of diamond earrings.

In another picture, she posed next to Naomi Campbell and Edward Enninful, as well as posing alongside Stanley and Meryl for another iconic shot.

She captioned the post: ‘The Devil Wears Dolce Icons Miranda Priestly and Nigel aka Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci joined us for the show during Milan Fashion Week.’

The sequel is set for a May 2026 release – exactly 20 years after the original became a cultural phenomenon.

Whilst finalised plot details have been kept secret, it is thought audiences are set to follow Miranda as she grapples with the struggles facing print magazines.

Reports suggest she’ll need to turn to her former assistant Emily – who was played by Emily Blunt and is now a top executive at a luxury label – in a bid to secure vital advertising deals.

When the first film came out, Emily’s character was rumoured to be inspired by former Vogue writer Victoria ‘Plum’ Sykes, who herself has strenuously denied as much.

Miranda Priestly’s character however, is thought to be inspired by American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who announced she would be stepping down from her role in June after 37 years.

The original Devil Wears Prada wasn’t just a box office smash – it cemented itself as a cultural touchstone, turning Streep’s Miranda Priestly into an instantly iconic character and inspiring a generation of fashion lovers to whisper, ‘That’s all.’

By the time the sequel hits theatres in May 2026, it will mark 20 years since the first film debuted – a film that not only raked in $326.7 million worldwide on a modest $35–$41 million budget, but also became a pop culture phenomenon.

The original scored two Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Meryl Streep, who also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

It earned five BAFTA nods, three Golden Globe nominations overall, and cemented itself as one of the defining comedies of the 2000s.
