Has John Mulaney had jaw implants? Plastic surgeons weigh in on star’s ‘changing’ look

After being open about his addiction to drugs and his time in rehab, John Mulaney has made his way back into the public eye stronger than ever – particularly, his jawline.

The comedian, 43, made a stunning return to the spotlight after his stint in rehab in 2021, releasing a stand up special in 2023 titled Baby J and a talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, which premiered in March 2025.

While his fans have celebrated his triumphant return, some are speculating the comedian may have undergone jaw implants or filler after noticing his chin and face appeared wider in recent months.

In recent snaps, the SNL alum’s jawline appears more square and prominent in comparison to his face during his days on the variety show.

‘Good lord John Mulaney’s jaw implant looks RIDICULOUS c’mon man he looks like he’s doing a Jay Leno impersonation,’ one shocked fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘Did John Mulaney get work done or something?’ asked another. ‘Why does his chin/jaw look more chiseled?’

Another fan declared: ‘Never forgiving John Mulaney for that stupid looking jaw implant he got in an effort to present more masculine. Does he think we don’t remember how he used to look? Idk man,’ questioned someone else.

While some are adamant he has undergone cosmetic surgery, others disagreed – pointing out his facial changes could be simply due to aging.

‘Totally agree, nothing wrong with fillers but I think it makes complete sense that getting sober, having kids, changing your look, and simply aging would make an impact!’ someone argued.

‘He just aged a bit and filled out a little, damn people see normal aging now and are like the f**k is this,’ an appalled fan agreed.

Dr. Corey Maas, a board-certified facial and aesthetic plastic surgeon, told the Daily Mail that although he has never personally treated Mulaney, it does appear that ‘at a minimum,’ Mulaney has undergone volumizing correction of the jawline or had filler.

Dr. Maas, who is the former President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), said he can notice a difference in Mulaney’s face at the angle of the jaw and around the chin.

‘[There is] some enhancement or strengthening of the jawline all the way along that can be done with fillers, or it can be done with implants,’ he pointed out, after analyzing a series of pictures.

However, the expert said it is ‘impossible’ to determine what Mulaney may have undergone without touching and feeling his face.

‘I think, [jaw implants are] becoming more common in men because it’s strengthening of the jawline,’ he said. ‘It’s attractive in general.’

Dr. Joseph Field, a California-based cosmetic dentist, who also has not treated Mulaney, told the Daily Mail while he doesn’t think Mulaney has had surgery, he may have undergone a treatment called bite restoration which can have a similar result.

Dr. Joseph Field, a California-based cosmetic dentist, told the Daily Mail while he doesn’t think Mulaney (pictured in 2025) has had surgery, he may have undergone a treatment called bite restoration which can have a similar result

‘[It’s] one of the best-kept secrets in cosmetic dentistry and is a non-invasive treatment that creates dramatic jawline definition by rebuilding the bite,’ Dr. Field explained.

Dr. Field said the procedure involves restoring the worn-down back teeth and ‘opening up the bite,’ which elongates the facial muscles, lifts sagging skin, and redefines the lower third of the face.

‘The change is shockingly similar to getting jaw implants or a lower facelift,’ he added. ‘But bite restoration requires zero needles, zero downtime and provides a bonus of relief for TMJ pain.’

The dentist continued, saying people may just be noticing the results of Mulaney undergoing the bite restoration, not implants.

‘By rebuilding the back teeth, his jawline would appear sharper and more sculpted because the treatment literally repositions how the facial muscles and skin drape over the bone structure,’ he explained.

‘It’s part science, part art, and it can be one of the most transformative things I do for patients,’ Dr. Field added. ‘Yes, it’s possible to achieve results that dramatic through a bite restoration procedure.’

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a jaw implant is a solid piece of silicone surgically added to your existing jawline.

Its purpose is to enhance an individual’s jawline by making the lower part of your face wider and longer, giving a sharper, more defined jaw angle.

Daily Mail has reached out to a representative of John Mulaney for comment.

Mulaney famously went to rehab for his addiction to cocaine and alcohol at the end of 2020, following an intervention held by some of his A-lister friends.

In an interview with David Letterman in 2024, father-of-two Mulaney opened about about his stint in rehab, revealing he cracked two of his teeth while in withdrawal.

‘Getting off those can be very rough. I was in the detox hospital room and I was grinding my teeth so much that a molar cracked,’ he told the veteran talk show host.
