Digital and digital addiction: What is the hidden link between them?

The study, conducted by the University of Portsmouth in cooperation with Surrey University, showed that what is known as “evening patterns” is directly related to the harmful use of technology, as young people resort to their phones and social media platforms as a way to alleviate emotional pressures, but that often exacerbates the problem.

The results indicated that the harmful use is to worry when avoiding the phone, neglecting responsibilities in favor of browsing, and frequent verification of notifications, while social media addiction appears in excessive and uncontrolled use that disrupts daily life.

The study relied on a poll that included 407 participants between the ages of 18 and 25, using psychological standards to study the relationship between sleep patterns, mental health difficulties and excessive use of technology.

“Our results indicate a vicious circle. Young people with evening patterns suffer from loneliness and anxiety, so they resort to the use of smartphones and social media, but instead of improving their condition, their suffering is exacerbated,” said Dr. Anna-Setina and Linheimo of the University of Portsmouth.

She added: “This study reveals new mechanisms that were not clear before, and confirming that the emotional factor, especially the unit, is the main reason behind the unhealthy use of technology.”

As for Dr. Simon Evans of Surrey University, he stressed the importance of facing the roots of the problem: “It is not enough to ask young people to reduce the use of their phones, but we have to help them manage feelings of anxiety and isolation, especially in the late night hours when support services are limited.”

The researchers demand awareness and support programs targeting young people, especially students, stressing that raising awareness of the association of sleep patterns and psychological difficulties using technology in a harmful way that may contribute to developing more effective interventions.

The study was published in Plos One.
