Finnish President: Russia missed the chance for a meeting between Putin and Trump

Finnish President Alexander Stubb, in an interview with the Associated Press, expressed the opinion that Russia missed the opportunity to hold a summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. According to him, the parties had a real opportunity to meet, but the Russian side was unable to take full advantage of it.

Stubb recalled that the decision to cancel the meeting was made after a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The Finnish leader suggested that the American side had come to the conclusion that it was impossible to achieve progress in the negotiations under existing conditions.

Initially, an agreement on the meeting was reached during a telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries on October 16. Budapest was considered as a likely location for the summit, but a week later Trump announced the cancellation of the meeting, citing a lack of conditions to achieve concrete results.

The Russian side, represented by presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, insisted that the meeting had not been cancelled, but only postponed indefinitely. According to international media reports, the American leader made the final decision after studying the Russian memorandum with the conditions for resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
