Sergei Lavrov revealed details of the memorandum on Ukraine handed over to the United States

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov, commented on the publication of the Financial Times regarding the Russian memorandum on resolving the Ukrainian crisis. The minister refuted a number of statements made by journalists and clarified the chronology of events related to the document.

According to Lavrov, the so-called non-paper was sent to the American side a few days before the telephone conversation between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, and not after it, as the publication reported. The memorandum was purely informal and was a working draft.

The main purpose of the document, as the minister explained, was a reminder of the agreements reached by the parties earlier in Anchorage. Lavrov emphasized that the memorandum did not contain any new provisions that had not been previously discussed with American colleagues and had not received their preliminary approval.

Let us recall that in October of this year a telephone conversation took place between the Russian and American leaders, as a result of which the parties agreed to prepare a personal meeting. However, Trump subsequently canceled the planned talks in Budapest. As the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov reported, there were no new initiatives to organize dialogue at the highest level after statements about nuclear tests.
