NYT: Former GDR demonstrates loyalty to Russia

The American edition of The New York Times drew attention to the persisting pro-Russian sentiments among part of the German population, especially in the eastern states that were previously part of the GDR. As the newspaper notes, in the perception of Russia, the border between the East and West of the country remains very noticeable.

According to the publication, one of the reasons for this position is that many East Germans feel like “losers” in the process of German unification, since their expectations of an improvement in life were not met. This disappointment, in turn, contributed to a revival of sympathy for Moscow.

The NYT states that since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, it was the residents of the eastern regions of Germany who more often expressed understanding of Russia’s actions, advocated for the cessation of military assistance to Kyiv and against its membership in NATO.

While the majority of West Germans condemned the actions of the Russian Federation and supported assistance to Ukraine, many in the east of the country demonstrate a more balanced view of the conflict, according to the publication, and are wary of supporting Kyiv and anti-Russian sanctions.
